The Place for Events

The company’s current slogan, The Place for Events, is a rarity in company slogans. It’s true. It has been for at least three years and it still is now.

It’s true because of two simple and obvious features: Event Moderation tools and Event Publicity tools, neither one of which is very good. But they are just good-enough against extremely weak competition.

Changing of the Code

AltspaceVR was launched in 2015 and the code running everything is old. It is no longer compatible with important worldbuilding software that is a de facto standard.

Updating is painful and this is a season of pain for world builders and event managers. Everyone knows about the long run benefits. I’m guessing the transition could have been handled better to reduce short-term suffering, but I don’t know all the forces involved.

The main driver is Unity, or rather AltspaceVR’s decision to be compatible with the software engine most professionals use for the kinds of 3D models used in VR. Unity’s Universal Render Pipeline (URP) is software that helps artists manage every step in the process of creating models, adding surfaces and lighting, and rendering them. After the upgrade, the URP will be fully available.
