Thank you for cutting through so much of the uninformed emotional response to the inevitable end of NN. The Internet is just a reflection of the oligarchic form of capitalism that dominates the US at this time and seeks global hegemony. My only regret is that you did not expand more on the public utility concept. People hear ‘public utility’ and assume the same Big Govt that is effectively controlled by corporate America would run the Net. That is not necessarily the case, although in today’s political environment it is certainly what would happen. A public utility could also be run by a democratically-elected body not appointed by bought-and-paid-for officials like the FCC is. It could operate entirely outside of government; in fact, it would have to unless we want more of the same old same old. I favor a public utility model for a wide range of essential services, and I think that people who care about change that has any meaning should be articulating models in which public utility governing bodies act as a counterbalance to government and corporations which are really the same thing.
