Ravin’ and More in VR

August 26, 2021

I cannot say that I have been to a rave. But now I have in VR.

When I was getting high and listening to live music, it wasn’t called raves yet. But I was once under the influence of psilocybin with Jimi Hendrix singing and playing very close by so I get the basic idea.

The events now called ‘Raves’ in VRChat and probably other places are, in my opinion, the real thing. They lose a bit in some ways but actually gain a bit in others so overall — this shit is a Rave!

I would say the main upsides of VR raving is how the environment can be made into anything so easily. I was in the real world Audio-Visual business for many years and I know what it means to set up a screen, or to move it. It can even require Union authorization, of multiple Unions.

Not in VR. Many gravity and union defying Screen placements can be accomplished with a check in the right box. For VRChat Raves, they invent new boxes and check them.

Of course Raves are not the only alt-social activity being reinvented in VR. Read Morgan Sung’s, What It’s Like to Dance at a VR Strip Club, on Mashable.
